Narrative of a five years expedition on the Wild Coast of South America

Activity: Tea & Talk
Topics: History
Date: Tuesday 5th March 2024
Time: 5.00 PM
Venue: Moray House Trust

You are warmly invited to join us as we resume the tea & talk series.
This year the theme is Eyewitness.

This first talk will be based on the account of a soldier, Captain John Stedman, (published in 1796) of his five-year sojourn on the ‘Wild Coast’. Stedman’s Narrative gives a detailed first-hand account of plantation life and maroon resistance and communities in the Dutch colony of Suriname, at a time when Demerara, Berbice and Essequibo were all under Dutch control. Stedman’s Narrative is unusual in that it is also richly illustrated.
