The poems published in Kyk in the 1980s fall, broadly speaking, into clusters on a continuum. At one end, there is what AJ Seymour called ‘the apprentice tongue of the poet‘ which manifests either as a brief flash of creativity on the part of an amateur or as the gradual emergence of a distinctive poetic voice. At the other end, the peculiar genius of the master craftsmen such as Martin Carter and Derek Walcott. The pool of poets is as wide as it is deep, with early work by Mahadai Das, Cyril Dabydeen and Edwina Melville (from our shores) and Velma Pollard, Shake Keane and George Campbell (from the Caribbean).
The selection has been curated by Jacqueline de Weever, poet, niece of AJ Seymour and contributor to Kyk.
