Dr Juanita Cox Westmaas answers questions about Edgar Mittelholzer

Edgar Mittelholzer was born in New Amersterdam on 16th December 1909. On Tuesday 16th December 2014, Moray House Trust hosted a lecture by Dr Juanita Cox Westmaas to commemorate his life and work. In her talk, entitled “In the Eye of the Storm, Edgar Mittelhozer 1909-1965”, Dr Cox Westmaas traced the arc of Mittelholzer’s career as a writer and the reception his work received among readers and critics. Mittelholzer was one of the first West Indians whose work was published and widely read in the northern hemisphere. His early novels are characterised by West Indian themes and settings and earned him a reputation in the metropolis as a writer of some stature. Ironically though, once he shifted his critical gaze to English and European themes and settings, the same critics were less enamoured of his efforts. Dr Cox Westmaas described the extraordinary range and depth of Mittelholzer’s oeuvre and made a strong case for it to be re-examined by readers everywhere.
