Ideas Forum: The Knowledge Underground 2014

Activity: Ideas Forum
Co-ordinator: The Consultancy Group
Date: Wednesday April 16 2014

On the 16 April 2014, a first-time event was held at Moray House Trust entitled: IDEAS FORUM: The Knowledge Underground 2014. TCG Logo

The IDEAS Forum was started in 2012 by The Consultancy Group (TCG), a local consulting firm, as an in-house activity to discuss areas of interest and current research that TCG is engaged in, including areas of research related to the environment, human rights, economics and culture, and these presentations were made by technical experts and associates of TCG.

The objective of the current event, made public for the first time, is to provide a space for the discussion of ideas that have driven human progress. The topics are drawn from Time Magazine’s list of 100 Ideas: History’s Greatest Breakthroughs, Inventions and Theories – with topics ranging from the alphabet to the free market, and from democracy to the World Wide Web.

At the first forum there were three 20-minute presentations. One was by American neurologist Dr Kenneth Gross who spoke on evolution. Mr Oliver Insanally, President of the Guyana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA), gave a talk on animal rights. Guyanese blogger and activist, Ms Sara Bharrat, spoke on French philosopher René Descartes’ influential idea in Western Philosophy, “I think therefore I am,” integrating Guyanese experience and her personal research. Mr Vidya Kissoon moderated the event, which was opened with remarks from Roxana Kawall.

Local artist Desmond Alli who had made a painting backdrop to mark the series also spoke of the importance of knowledge and truth from the perspective of the artist. Another IDEAS Forum event is scheduled to be held in May and more information is available on the TCG website (www.theconsultancygroupguyana.com).
