Stanley Ming, a well known local entrepreneur, made a presentation, titled ‘Guyana 2030’ or ‘An Overview of Options & Opportunities (O3) for National Development’. The proposal was crafted by Stanley Ming, Eric Phillips, Joseph Singh and Supriya Singh. It is a synthesis of historical and updated studies, implemented and planned projects, and interpretations that derive from the global environment. It represents the fundamentals of an ambitious plan of action intended to transform Guyana.
Guyana 2030 is a holistic plan of action for Guyana over the next decade or two. The proposal examined opportunities for Guyana in terms of its geographic location, natural resources and market access and outlined plans for the country to serve as a trans-shipment port for Brazil and Venezuela and a link to Caricom and North American markets. Challenges such as climate change and severe flooding were also reviewed. The presentation ranged in scope from proposals to enhance the country’s infrastructure (such as the development of a trans-shipment port) to a list of suggestions of crops we should be cultivating such as moringa and quinoa, a gluten-free, protein-rich wheat and rice substitute which has ten times the market value of wheat. The audience included members of the private and public sectors, the diplomatic corps and the general citizenry and there were many questions and much debate after it concluded.
