Stamps of British Guiana: a collection of stories

Activity: Tea & Illustrated Talk
Topics: Postage stamps, history of British Guiana
Host: Moray House Trust
Date: 31st October 2023
Cost: G$ 5000 per ticket

Stamps are often freighted with history. They are tiny cultural and historical relics, souvenirs of a particular moment in time. Sometimes too, they are the wayward product of a mishap or mistake, with the unusual caveat that a combination of these may inflate their value for posterity!
We will focus on a small selection of postage stamps from British Guiana, including the famous 1856 British Guiana 1 cent magenta, the most expensive item by weight and size ever sold in history. At the time, stamps were at the forefront of a wave of change and increasingly sophisticated communications and transportation networks, some of which survive today.
This talk continues our current series, Artefacts, a closer look at the objects around us.

As usual, tea will be provided by Made with Love.
The event will be hosted by Russel Lancaster.

A reminder that tickets must be purchased in advance.
Please note that the tea will start an hour later than previously.
