The Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030 was released for consultation recently. It seeks to leverage Guyana’s “world-class forest, biodiversity, water and marine resources” to build a “low-carbon ecosystem economy” using mechanisms such as carbon-pricing. It argues that these resources have, historically, been undervalued and ignored. For example, it places an annual value on Guyana’s forests of USD 40 billion. Creating a low carbon economy is an enormous and complex challenge but it is one that we all have to start to grapple with in the face of climate change. In many countries there is a focus on the need to de-carbonise existing sectors of the economy, business-models, lifestyles and practices. Indeed the LCDS acknowledges that one task will be to upgrade Guyana’s physical capital; its “energy, transportation, digital, water and housing infrastructure”.
Speakers included Pradeepa Bholanath (LCDS 2030), Curtis Bernard (Conservation International), Dr Thomas Singh (University of Guyana’s GREEN Institute), Aiesha Williams (WWF). The session was moderated by Alexi La Rose.
Moray House Trust has worked for a decade to promote culture and public discourse in Guyana. It was founded on the belief that a culture thrives and develops where ideas circulate and are robustly debated and interrogated.
