Bauxite, Petroleum and Sugar Production in Guyana

In late July, Moray House Trust hosted a panel discussion about “Bauxite, Petroleum and Sugar Production in Guyana: parallels, contrasts and challenges.”
This included a brief presentation by Dr Adams (bauxite / oil) and one by Professor Mandle (sugar / oil) and a discussion among the panellists facilitated by Dr Thomas Singh.

Dr. Adams, who grew up in Linden, has 40 years of experience in the public and private sectors in the environmental management, groundwater and petroleum production fields, including 30 years with the US Department of Energy. He holds a PhD in Environmental Engineering, MS Degrees in Groundwater Hydrology and Geological Engineering/Petroleum Engineering, and a BS in Civil Engineering.

Professor Mandle taught at the University of Guyana several decades ago and has continued to maintain a professional interest in the country and the region. His publications include The Plantation Economy: Population and Economic Change in Guyana (1978) and Persistent Underdevelopment: Change and Economic Modernization in the West Indies (1996). Professor Mandle is the W. Bradford Wiley Professor of Economics at Colgate University .

Dr Thomas Singh a lecturer in the Department of Economics, University of Guyana, (UG).  Prior to this, he was the coordinator of the Institute of Development Studies, also at UG.
