Activity: Ideas Forum

The Ideas Forum is an attempt to provide a space for the discussion of ideas that have driven human progress. The topics are drawn from Time Magazine’s list of 100 Ideas: History’s Greatest Breakthroughs, Inventions and Theories – with topics ranging from the alphabet to the free market, and from democracy to the World Wide Web.
On this occasion there were three presenters, Aleema Nasir, Nikhil Ramkarran and Amar Panday. They talked about Islam, Photography and Nationalism respectively. The sessions were moderated by David Singh.
Aleema Nasir is an advocate of women empowerment, and serves as an activist in dispelling stereotypical beliefs about Muslim women in our society. She heads the women’s arm of the Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana (CIOG), and is Chairperson on The Rights of the Child Commission (RCC).
Nikhil Ramkarran obtained a law degree from the University of the West Indies and graduated from the Hugh Wooding Law School (Trinidad) in September 2000. He is a partner at Cameron & Shepherd. In his spare time, he is an avid hobbyist photographer and is the 2012 winner of the Guyana Visual Arts Competition Gold Medal for photography.
Amar Panday BA, MA, is the current CEO of the Rights of the Child Commission. He has also worked as a researcher in the Caribbean Research Library of the University of Guyana. Mr. Panday is a trained historian and human resources specialist with a keen interest in Guyanese and West Indian history.
David Singh (Phd), is the Executive Director of Conservation International Guyana and a Vice President at Conservation International. David has a PhD in Chemistry from Temple University, Philadelphia, USA. He is the former Director General of the Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and Development (IICRCD)
