Date: Thursday 7 March 2013
At an event to mark International Women’s Day, a documentary video entitled ‘Break the Silence, Stop the Violence’ was shown and there was a discussion afterwards. The half-hour documentary highlighted the complex, dynamic nature of domestic violence in Guyana and featured the experiences of survivors and women who had lost their lives to domestic violence. Juxtaposed in this mosaic are also the role of religion, law enforcement and the Domestic Violence Act. The documentary aimed to show that domestic violence not only affects the family but that it is also a community and national problem with far-reaching impact.
